Building a dream home starts with having custom house plans drawn up. But there are a few preliminary steps that should be taken before any plans get created. Here are three steps that shouldn't be overlooked:
Purchase Your Land
Purchasing some land is one of the most important things you should do before having your custom house plans drawn up. You need to already know the size, shape, and location of your property before even thinking about how to design your custom home. If you make plans before buying your land, you might find that you can't find any land that is suitable for the plans you've had made.
You want your custom house to complement your property and the specific location in which you live. The types of foliage that naturally grow, the kinds of views that are available, and the neighboring home designs should all be considered when designing your new custom home to ensure that the plans will be feasible and will make you happy for many years to come.
Look at Example Plans
It is also a good idea to spend some time looking at example house plans so you have a good idea of what's actually possible when creating your own custom plans. While you might already have an idea in mind about what kind of house you want to live in, looking at example plans may inspire new ideas that you haven't thought of and that complement the designs you already have in mind.
You can find example plans online for free to print and inspect before having your own custom house plans drawn up. But be aware that most free plans you find online can't be used as your own house plans unless you decide to purchase them. Read the usage requirements if you want to incorporate any of the plans you find into your own house plan design.
Find the Right Service Provider
Another important step you'll have to take before having your house plans created is hiring a service provider to do the legwork. But not all house designers are created equal. Some tend to utilize parts of plans that they have already made to create new plans for clients, which doesn't necessarily result in a custom design when all is said and done. And some home designers might not be willing to guarantee a turnaround time for your plans which could hold up your building project.
So take the time to find out what kind of experience a house designer has before you hire them for your planning project. And make sure that they will be making your plans from scratch, not from already drawn up ideas that have been used by other homeowners in the past.
