Making Your Four Season Sunroom Family-Friendly

Freddie Kuhn

A four season sunroom adds valuable square footage to your home, and can also provide a space for your entire family to spend time together. Many sunrooms, however, aren't necessarily set up to accommodate the children in your family. There are numerous things you can do to make your sunroom more conducive to children spending time in the room with the rest of the family.

Choose the Right Furniture

If you're planning to invite children to spend time in your sunroom, you won't want to outfit it with white couches and chairs. Instead, opt for furniture in darker colors because stains and dirt are less likely to show. Durable furniture is also a must because, chances are, small children will be rolling around on them or even jumping off of them. You might even consider adding a few child-sized chairs and a table, especially if you plan to serve meals in your sunroom.

Skip the Family Heirlooms

It might be tempting to decorate your sunroom with a few family heirlooms, but these are typically breakable and highly valuable. If children are going to be spending any time in the sunroom, you don't want to run the risk that your most precious possessions will get broken. Instead, decorate with items that aren't as likely to get broken and that won't break your heart if they do get damaged.

Make Your Sunroom Entertaining

Set up your four seasons sunroom to be a truly year round part of your home that the whole family can enjoy. For example, set up a telescope in your sunroom so you can do a little star-gazing with your children. Install a television and DVD player so you can host movie nights. Consider windows that can be opened to let in warm summer breezes. Couches that turn into beds make your sunroom a good place to host sleepovers for your children and their friends or for your grandchildren, nieces, and nephews to sleep when they come visit.

Stocking Your Sunroom

If you want the children in your life to want to spend time with you in the sunroom, stock it with kid-friendly things. Set up a small art station with a bookshelf and table. Include crayons, markers, paper, and coloring books so the kids can create while the adults chat. Add a few inside toys, such as dolls or building blocks, so the children will be encouraged to play at the grown-up's feet. For more ideas, talk to a professional like Patio Creations.
